The story of Balaam serves as a stern warning in the Bible, and it’s important for us to learn from it. Balaam was initially considered a prophet of God, though he was also known as a “soothsayer” at one point (See Numbers 22:1-23). When called on to curse Israel, God clearly commanded him not to go. However, enticed by the promise of great wealth, Balaam convinced himself that God wanted him to go. On the journey, an angel stood to block his path but he couldn’t see the angel. Money had clouded Balaam’s spiritual vision. The error of Balaam illustrates how a person who knows God may disregard His counsel for the sake of financial gain. This will ultimately lead to a loss of direction and spiritual discernment. Many believers have fallen into this trap, replacing God with gold. Let us pray: “Father, may the love of money never lead me astray. In Jesus’ name, amen.
