Every spiritual devotion can be done wrongly. Fasting is good but you can fast wrongly. In this season of fasting and prayers, it’s important we look at some biblical guidelines for a spiritually effective fast. Firstly, from our opening verse we see that in fasting, our motives must be set right. We are not fasting to prove a point or to compete with anyone. We are fasting because we have matters to address spiritually. The reward of fasting ought to be answers to prayers and divine intervention from God. However Jesus says if you fast to be noticed by men, when men notice you that’s your reward. As you fast, set your hearts aright with God for a genuine encounter. Don’t seek the praises of men, but the praise of God. Say after me: Lord, in this fast, I set my heart right on you alone!
