Our opening verse is part of the letters that the Apostle Paul wrote to his disciple, Timothy. In the verses preceding it, the Apostle Paul warned against the misconception that being rich is the same as being godly. He went on to say that the love of money is the root of all evil, and many have wandered from the faith and harmed themselves because they craved wealth.
Why am I providing this background? As Paul wrote this letter, he advised Timothy that instead of pursuing riches, he should pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, etc (vs 11). Those who chase after riches often fall into temptations that lead to their ruin. The Bible reminds us that we cannot take riches with us when we die. Therefore, instead of striving to attain wealth at all costs, we should fight the good fight of faith and lay hold of eternal life, for that is a more rewarding use of our lives.
